OPENING SCENE ANALYST

‘JOKER’ Todd Philips

This movie is about a lonely guy that takes care of his mom and sees and chance for fame and takes it. Being a thriller there was a lot of violence and enough to rate the movie R. The opening scene starts out violent setting the tone for the rest of the film. There were a lot of movies referenced during this film giving a comedic tone to an older audience. The main chapter is very monotone and mature, which wouldn’t make much sense to a younger audience. Everything in the opening scene is meant to be “unsettling” says the director. Theres a dark grim tone which sets the tone for the rest of the film.

Different Social Groups

‘American Beauty’ Sam Mendes

During this film there was a problem with having no excitement in this guys life. His wife and daughter have changes in their life which change things in his life. This film is about having to adapt to change and to find solutions when things change. American beauty is the perfect title for this because in America theres a lot of change and everyone is trying to fix all these problems. Jane is his insecure daughter (which a lot of teens in America deal with this problem) and she goes to her mom which causes problems in the family by bringing stress. Within all this stress the family has to learn how to compromise and stay strong.

Intended Audience

‘Fight Club’ David Fincher

This movie is about phobias and intended for a more mature audience. In many thriller movies and even dramas have violence, sex, and mature content. There was an identity problem in this film and in the opening scene it’s very prominent that this was an issue. There were rules to not mention the club during the film and a mature audience would only understand this. For example, kids wouldn’t understand why the club would be a secret. This research will help me and my partner with our film by making sure we catch the audiences attention and to see what the audience really wants to see.

Setting and Locations

‘Spotlight’ Tom McCarthy

This film is based off a true story on a scandal of child molestation. Theres a Catholic church that was involved in this and its very promenant in the opening scene. Being at a catholic church, this adds drama and will make the audience feel more attached. There were also scenes in Fenway Park, the Boston – Globe offices. Many movies in the drama, thriller genre are filmed in public locations or well known areas. From research, I’ve noticed it brings a more iconic feel to the movie and allows fans to go and visit where filming took place.

All locations in the opening scene had dimmed lighting and used ‘natural’ lighting as their main source. Further into the film, the actors attend a Red Sox game. This brought real life into the movies.

Opening Sequence

‘Gone Girl’ David Fincher

This drama thriller by David Fincher is about a wife that goes missing. This matches up with the pattern of something happening to vulnerable women. The opening clip showed a mans hand caressing a woman’s head as she lays on him. This movie started with an interment moment showing power over the girl. By the man moving and her feeling ‘safe’ gives the man ultimate power. This can reveal that something could happen to the girl either harmful to her or someone she’s close with. There was a monotone during this scene. Meaning there weren’t many words just light movements and slow looks from the woman. There wasn’t a lot of action during this opening scene. Just reveled the main characters and showed the relationship they have developed.

Opening Scene: This scene starts with a husband narrerating about how he wants to crush his wife’s skull to understand her way of thinking on a deeper level. The music gradually shifts into a deeper more coming onto something type of sound. This clip uses high pitch noises to add suspense and build to show something is about to happen. With such violent words used in the beginning and ending with the husband standing in front of the house and looking pale, you can assume he hurt his wife and maybe even kids. Camera angles cut throughout a neighborhood showing the setting. The director wanted to allow the audience to see the type of environment they live in and their way of life. They used that time to introduce the creative team in different corners on the screen. The title was placed in the center of the screen in a small font in a pale color, which can show a new beginning or an awaken feeling.

The Vanished, Introduced.

As a junior at Pasco High School, I chose to work with my partner Grace VanBuren. We worked together to add our own input in making an opening scene in a drama, thriller. I enjoy watching movies that make my heart rate rise so the question of what genre of movie to film wasn’t a question. We decided to have her niece play the role of a child getting kidnapped at a park. We tried to come up with a title describing a lost but without saying gone and we decided on “The Vanished”. Getting ZiZi (missing child) to cooperate would be a challenge but the idea was too pure to give it up. ZiZi has to have a real reaction in order for the film to be more realistic, so we brought her to a park but didn’t mention that she would be taken. The kidnapper was a trusted cousin of Grace so we knew he would play a good role in taking ZiZi. The mom role was played by Grace which was a good decision so ZiZi wouldn’t be frantic or uncomfortable. We planned on ending the clip at a police station to add realism and show more of the plot and where the film could lead to if it were a full movie.

As I began my research I came across a pattern of suspense and anticipation. The opening scenes have enough information to start visualizing the plot but lead the audience to wanting to discover more. These movies usually include children, animals, or women getting hurt for the purpose of pulling on a heart string. The main genre conventions with drama thrillers desire to grab the audiences attention with characters that are viewed as helpless. For example children, women, animals or the elderly. The style of the drama aspect of the film draws emotion from the audience and uses realistic characters.
